Nintendo started the year 2015 with the release of the incredibly beautiful and interesting game Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker for the Wii U gaming console. Captain Toad (in the Japanese version, Captain Kinopio) is a mushroom-like character in the Super Mario Galaxy game for the Nintendo Wii console, which was released in 2007. In 2013, Toad reappeared in one of the games about the Italian plumber Super Mario 3D World for Wii U. In this game, he was the main character of special puzzle levels in which he needed to collect stars scattered around a cunningly constructed level full of dangers and riddles This part of the game was so liked by the users that Nintendo decided to make a full-fledged game about this character.
It took the Japanese company a little more than a year to realize their plans and offer players the full-fledged adventures of Captain Toad. The new game consists of 64 unique levels of puzzles, as well as 18 bonus levels that will become available to you after the passage of the main game.
Each level is a carefully constructed 3D environment full of different mechanisms, secret rooms, treasures and enemies. Captain Toad is very serious and focused. He dreams, like adventurer Indiana Jones, to discover countless treasures, and nothing can stand in his way to the cherished goal. From time to time, his friend, Toadette, helps Captain Toad in his adventures. His backpack is full of provisions, so he is not capable of jumping, like Mario, and cracking down on enemies in this way. Because of this, Toad has to be much smarter and more inventive than his peers in the workshop. When confronted with the enemy, the Toad, like Mario, is reduced in size. Re-collision means that the level will have to start from the very beginning, so as soon as possible, look for the super-mushroom so that Toad will once again become of normal size.
The main goal during the passage of each level is to detect and collect three giant diamonds that can be hidden so well that it will take you a long time to find them. To successfully complete the level, you will need to get to the sparkling star, familiar to us even from the games about the mustache plumber. Despite the fact that at first glance, all this seems to be a rather simple task - in fact, everything is not so easy. Captain Toad has a bright miner's flashlight on his head, the light of which allows to detect objects like gold coins that are invisible to the naked eye. Examine each level as thoroughly as possible for hidden bonuses.
The gameplay is pretty straightforward, but at the same time it is brilliant and fascinating. Since you are holding a large screen Wii U game controller in your hands, you can use it for various in-game moments. For example, in those moments when the main character will have to aim at the enemies from a cannon, you will be able to aim precisely thanks to the controller. Also, the touch screen controller will allow you to touch various objects on the screen to activate them. You can move the giant blocks with your fingers or open the valves, activating the mechanisms, or just poking at enemies who will be frightened and freeze in place for a while. At certain moments of the game, you can even gently blow into the controller's microphone, which also directly affects the virtual world.
The main control consists in two analog sticks, one of which controls the Toad itself, and the second allows you to rotate the camera around the level to find all the secrets hidden from your gaze. Interaction with the outside world for the Toad, as a rule, is limited to a single “A” button on the gamepad. With this button, he can pull out turnips from the ground, which can be launched into enemies. Also in the ground can be hidden very important items like a pickaxe, with which Toad can destroy strong brick walls and get to especially rare treasures.
In some levels, you will have to experience a split personality, when Toad, who swallows the magic cherry, has a twin brother, and you will need to control two characters at once, which move along the screen symmetrically. Very unusual sensations, it should be noted. From a series of games about Mario, this project inherited the need to collect gold coins. 100 coins - one life in your character's piggy bank. You will find a gold mushroom on the level - it is 50 coins at once, but finding it is not so easy. Sometimes it is buried in the sand and you, listening to the vibrations of your controller, will have to find it as a real sapper.
Many levels will require you to repeatedly pass, so that you can reveal all their secrets and collect all the treasures, so the language does not turn to call the game too short. After the first passage of the level, you are shown an additional condition that must be met in order for the level to be considered 100% complete. This may be a requirement that during the passage you did not notice any enemy, or the need to collect a certain number of coins. Such tasks the game will offer you a great many, so you will not have to miss.
The complexity of the game varies from "even a child can handle it" to "pull out all your hair and break a gamepad", and this is simply wonderful. After all, the game can be played with your children, who will ask you to help them get through the most difficult moments. Personally, I will definitely re-enter the game at least once a few years later with my daughter, who is still too small to play games.
But do not be afraid of my words about the complexity of the game! If you cannot complete any level for too long, the game meets you and gives the captain Toad a mushroom of invincibility, thanks to which the enemies are not afraid of it, which allows the protagonist to concentrate on finding the treasure.
Be sure to note the incredible beauty of the game. Game design Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is close to the ideal. Considering that the Nintendo Wii U is a rather weak console compared to the PS4 and Xbox One, developers have to put a lot of effort into getting an amazing picture on your screen. And in this case, they coped with the task just to cheer. The game looks bright, juicy, the characters are charming, and the levels are amazing variety and careful work.
During the game, Toad will meet with dangerous bosses, each of which requires a special approach to defeat him. You will certainly be impressed by these unusual levels, when you are required to all your skill and ingenuity. And do not worry: when you run out of life, you will be offered a small mini-game, after which you will be given another chance to defeat evil.

Nintendo is renowned for bringing every game to near-perfection. No bugs, no rough edges - just flawless gameplay and the quality of every smallest detail. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is no exception to the rule. This is an exemplary project for fans of non-trivial puzzles and just very beautiful games. Despite the characters performed in the children's style, this game will be able to challenge even very experienced adult players, let alone play with the children in such a complete pleasure. If you are a happy owner of a Nintendo Wii U gaming console, be sure to purchase this game for yourself in the collection. I put the game 10 points out of 10 , since I could not find a single minus in this project, and this happens infrequently.
