Digital actors, periodically appearing on large screens, as well as in numerous video games, still leave much to be desired in terms of visual plausibility. Of course, the fault is the imperfection of the existing graphic and capture technologies, as well as features of the human psyche that unmistakably distinguishes a living person from his "digital copy" (the same effect of an "ominous valley"). Epic Games company within the framework of the exhibition Game Developers Conference presented a new generation of technology of digitization of actors, developed by its specialists.
Of course, digitized 3D models of actors are rendered in real time by the graphics engine Unreal Engine . Developers refer to the new technology as "digital people of the next generation". 3Lateral, Cubic Motion, Tencent and Vicon also took part in the creation of this method of digitization of actors. As the first demonstration, the audience was shown a video called "Siren". For him, the appearance of Chinese actress Binjie Jiang was digitized, but all the movements and facial expressions of the resulting 3D model were played by another actress in a special motion capture studio. We suggest you take a look at the final video, as well as watch a short film about creating a video.
Following the "Siren" the audience was shown a couple more videos. This time on the screen appeared a digital copy of the famous actor Andy Serkis, who performed many roles in Hollywood films. Basically the actor plays various CGI-characters, giving them their voice, facial expressions and movements. For example, it was he who played the role of Gollum in The Lord of the Rings, then he played the giant monkey King Kong in a modern remake of the famous film. Andy so convincingly played the role of primacy that he was invited to appear in the series of films "Planet of the Apes", where he got the main role. From the recent roles of Serkis, we can mention the supreme leader Snouka from Star Wars and Clo's character from the blockbuster series about the superheroes Marvel.
A little lower you can see the digitized facial expression of Andy Surkis, which was imposed on the face of a fictional 3D-character.
At the end of the presentation, Epic Games representatives also showed the audience a new technology of real-time raytracing created jointly with Microsoft and NVIDIA. This means that the reflections of all the light rays in the frame, their refraction and dispersion are counted by the graphics engine on the move, without the need for a long rendering of each individual image. We suggest you take a look at this demonstration on the example of a funny scene based on the universe of Star Wars.
