Norwegian school teaches children ethics through video games

Норвежская школа преподаёт ученикам этику на примере видеоигр

The teachers at the Norwegian school named Nordal Grieg found a very original way to teach their students such an educational subject as ethics. As a visual aid, it was decided to use the Xbox 360 game console and The Walking Dead video game.

The Walking Dead game created by Telltale Games based on a very popular comic strip, which tells about a group of people who are trying to survive in a zombie apocalypse. According to the comics, a no less popular television series is also filmed, for the first season of which a very talented director Frank Darabont, known for his screen versions of Stephen King's Green Mile and Shawshank Escape, put his hand.

The game compares favorably with the series in that the player is able to independently influence the development of a non-linear plot. At certain moments of this interactive drama, you are provided with a difficult moral choice that will surely entail certain consequences. And in this case there is no one right decision, since any choice in this game is a kind of personal sacrifice, which is very difficult for many. For example, during the attack of several zombies on your group, you need to decide which of two friends to save. If you choose one of them - the second inevitably perishes. And people who sympathize with the deceased will treat you with undisguised contempt. It is on such difficult decisions that most of this game is built.

Teacher Tobias Staabi believes that The Walking Dead game is best suited for teenage students to feel full responsibility for their actions. The idea of using video games in the educational process was liked by everyone without exception. The students were completely delighted with the idea of their teacher, for it is not a secret to anyone that the information that is presented to us in a fascinating form is absorbed much more efficiently. Pupils choose certain phrases in the dialogues between the characters, make difficult decisions and face unexpected plot twists - this is much nicer than listening to a monotonous lecture without any motivation.

Let us hope that the bold experience of the Norwegian teachers will one day reach the Russian schools, because it becomes more and more difficult to bring knowledge to modern children every year.
