John Carmack, the creator of the legendary game Doom and the founder of the whole game genre of first-person shooters, told reporters in an interview, because of what he left the walls of id Software, which he had once founded.
During an interview with USA Today tabloid, John Carmack admitted that the main reason for his departure was the belief that the future of video games lies in the field of virtual reality and helmets like Oculus Rift.
“I really think that virtual reality is the most impressive thing that can happen to the entire gaming industry right now,” Carmack explained to reporters. - I witnessed the transition of video games from 2D to 3D graphics, and in recent years we have all seen how games have smoothly flowed from computers and consoles to smartphones and tablets. If you constantly turn around in this industry, then whether you like it or not, you begin to notice certain trends and trends. It seems to me that behind the virtual reality lies a really huge potential. ”
We all know very well that this talented developer has created one of the most significant 3D gaming engines in the history of the gaming industry. As it turned out, in fact, initially, Carmack did not want to leave the studio he created. He planned to combine his work on current projects of id Software with the help of the developer of the virtual reality helmet Oculus Rift in terms of adapting their technologies to modern game engines. A fruitful collaboration between the two companies was planned. John even tried to make a deal with the current owner of id Software - the publishing house ZeniMax Media, which in June 2009 acquired his studio. But, surprisingly, the leadership rejected his proposal, believing that the developer would not cope with his main responsibilities if he worked on two fronts at once. Anyway, the virtual reality of none of the directors is not particularly impressive.
“It was a great opportunity for both parties. Everyone would benefit from this collaboration. But they turned me down, which really upset me. Well, I was not lucky. And when I realized that I would not be allowed to freely engage in the development of virtual reality technologies, I simply decided not to renew my contract with id Software. ”
Recall that after leaving id Software, John Carmack was accepted into a friendly team of Oculus VR, which is currently actively preparing its first Oculus Rift virtual reality headset to enter the market. The helmet should go on sale before the end of this year and will maintain a rather impressive list of video games, including the magnificent survival-horror "Forest", about which we once wrote on our website.
