I still clearly remember how in 1996 I first launched the game Resident Evil (known as Biohazard in Japan) on the Sony PlayStation console and literally disappeared into it. A mysterious mansion full of secrets, puzzles, horrific zombies and monstrous mutants - the developers from Capcom definitely knew how to interest players. However, even having repeatedly played the game along and across, I still have a lot of questions to this story, the answers to which I could get only from a prequel called Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster.
If you played the very first Resident Evil of 1996, you probably remember that the plot of the game started from the moment when the Alpha team of the STARS special squad goes in search of the Bravo team that has disappeared before. The task of their predecessors was to investigate a series of mysterious murders in the Arkley Mountains near the town of Rakun City. Special Forces soldiers find the crashed helicopter of the Bravo team, but at this moment terrible mutant dogs are attacking them. The few survivors after a fight with bloodthirsty beasts operatives hide in a kind of abandoned mansion, inside of which most of the game takes place.
The prequel to this story under the heading Resident Evil Zero was first released on the Nintendo Game Cube console back in 2002. Six years later, it was ported to the next Nintendo-Wii set-top box, and in 2015, Capcom officially announced the development of an HD remaster game, which can be enjoyed by the owners of PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One consoles, as well as users of personal computers running Windows Well, it is said - done! The release of the game finally took place, and fans of the Resident Evil series (including me), who had previously bypassed the prequel side, can now familiarize themselves with the background of the events that occurred with the Alpha team.
What really happened to the team of operatives "Bravo"? Their helicopter suddenly refused right in the air and made a hard landing in a forest near Raccoon City. Not far from the crash site, they found an overturned jeep carrying a war criminal Billy Cohen. The corpses of two officers with strange markings on the body, as well as the absence of the body of the criminal at the scene of the accident, prompted special thoughts to evil thoughts, so they split up and began to comb the forest in search of answers. The player plays the role of paramedic detachment - Rebecca Chambers, who accidentally stumbles upon a mysterious passenger train stopped in the wilderness of the wilderness.
Exploring the wagon behind the wagon, she understands with horror that the express is teeming with the revived dead and creatures far more terrible than some kind of zombies. At a certain moment, she encounters the fugitive criminal Billy Cohen and unites with him, as they alone cannot survive in this nightmare. From this point on, the main gameplay begins, implying the successive control of two main characters with the ability to switch between them at any time. The duo of Billy and Rebecca should not only break through the hordes of monstrous mutants, but also find the answer to the main question - what was the root cause of this terrible biological infection.
It should be noted right away that the developers did everything they could to make the HD-remaster of the game feel as comfortable and modern as possible. Graphically, the project was literally reworked from scratch: all interiors, three-dimensional models, textures and special effects create the impression that the game was developed not in 2002, but at least a year ago. The picture in the full Full HD looks just great, and the support for the 16: 9 screen format (the original worked in 4: 3) radically changes the impression of the game. In addition, lighting and shadows were significantly improved. Add to this the sound of Dolby Digital 5.1, the presence of an alternative control scheme, more convenient in comparison with the original, and at the output we have an almost exemplary remaster of the game 13 years ago.
Each of the characters is unique in its own way. Since Rebecca is a paramedic, she is excellent at making herbal infusions and powders with which you can heal wounds, and also understands various chemical compounds. But its main drawback is weak defense and little strength. Billy does not differ in pharmacology, but he is strong enough to withstand more attacks and be able to move a heavy object. The interaction of the two characters is a special emphasis in the gameplay Resident Evil Zero HD. For example, one of the characters is locked in a certain room, equipped with a kitchen elevator, and the second character at this time must find some tool and pass it using this same elevator to his partner so that he can rescue himself from imprisonment. This is the easiest example of the interaction between the two main characters. The further you go on the plot, the more interesting and difficult it will be to become a puzzle.
It is important to remember that if you and your partner were in different places of the game location, it may be that at some point zombies will attack him. He will contact you by radio and ask for your support, and you should come to his aid as quickly as possible before you have eaten him there naturally. The death of one of the heroes will mean the end of the game. Conservation in Resident Evil Zero HD is traditionally carried out only in certain rooms equipped with typewriters. Do not have time to register before you zagbi pogrez - please re-try everything again. The game teaches you prudence and prudence from the first minutes. Fortunately there are three levels of complexity in case you are suddenly new to the series and still do not understand what's here for what.
In addition to the standard improvements for the remaster versions, Resident Evil Zero HD boasts the presence of several alternative costumes for the main characters (for example, you can dress Rebecca as a cheerleader), as well as the Wesker Mode bonus mode, which will be unlocked after the game has completely passed. In this mode, the character of Billy Cohen is replaced by the well-known antagonist of the series - Albert Wesker. Unlike Billy, he has unique abilities, such as super-fast running or a telekinetic strike, which throws opponents in different directions. Playing for Wesker, you will get completely different impressions from the game, which, of course, will please fans of the series. Why not for a while to become a “bad guy” with supernormal abilities? True, these abilities Wesker will receive only in the subsequent games of the series, but who before this is the case, when it all looks so cool?
Frankly, I lost interest in the Resident Evil series at the moment when it began to turn into an ordinary third-person shooter. This transformation began in the fourth part, which many people still consider to be ideal. But, as for me, all those post-lousy girls who were flooded with subsequent games completely destroyed the gloomy and oppressive atmosphere of the original trilogy. All the chilling horror from the game disappeared, giving way to gambling shooting zombies in company with the second player. This is why Resident Evil Zero HD especially pleased me, because it perfectly captures the atmosphere of my favorite games from the first PlayStation console. Here you have a lot of puzzles and zombies falling out of the refrigerator at you, mutant dogs breaking window frames with their bodies, and the oppressive atmosphere of loneliness and hopelessness that I have not had enough for a long time in the Resident Evil series.
Of course, not without a spoon of tar. I was somewhat disappointed with the quality of CG-screensavers, which, apparently, no one began to redraw from scratch (or the source code was simply lost). The video was simply dragged under the new resolution, which makes it seem rather muddy and low-quality. These inserts strongly contrast with the HD-image of the remaster, but since we do not see them so often, and most of the plot scenes are made on the game engine, this does not spoil the overall picture very much. Some players can also be annoyed by certain remnants of the past, transferred to the game from the original. For example, the fact that the camera in the game is static and demonstrates to us the room only as intended by the developers. Or stylized loading screens between the rooms, representing the opening door or stair steps on an absolutely black background. Of course, the boot screens of the game are not needed at all, since the locations are loaded almost instantly, but the developers deliberately decided to leave everything as it was in 2002, so as not to destroy the atmosphere of the original.
The most unpleasant, in my opinion, a relic of the past is an incredibly limited inventory of characters. You can carry quite a few items with you, so you constantly have to sacrifice something and leave valuable things behind, constantly returning behind them. On the one hand, this teaches you to carefully plan your actions and keep records of resources, and on the other hand, this whole backtracking is sometimes very annoying. But the game has one undoubted advantage for Russian gamers - its value. A digital copy of a PlayStation 4 game, for example, will cost you 1299 rubles, and PC owners can purchase the game on Steam for only 499 rubles. If you compare it with the price tag for other modern games, including HD-remasters, the Capcom management wants to shake hands with it.
Pros:
- The game looks just great in the updated graphics and 1080p.
- Finally, the developers have added a 16: 9 aspect ratio.
- Management has become much more logical and convenient than the original.
- This is the classic Resident Evil with an inimitable atmosphere.
- Cool puzzles designed for the interaction of two characters.
- Bonus mode in which you can become Albert Wesker.
- Very democratic price per game for all platforms.
Minuses:
- Some vestiges of the past clearly make themselves felt.
- CG-screensavers suffer from low resolution.
- The game is not translated into Russian.
The creator of the Resident Evil series, Japanese game designer Shinji Mikami, left Capcom some time ago and is now making his own games. His first solo project was the horror film The Evil Within, about which I already told you the year before last. However, if we compare Mikami's early work and what he is doing now, I will vote with both hands for the very first games of the Resident Evil series, as they were incredibly atmospheric and really scared the players. Just such a game is Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster, so fans of the original trilogy are simply obliged to purchase it in their collection. I put the game 8.5 zombies out of 10 .
