Unexpected information shared with the public the authoritative game portal Polygon. A reliable source, close to Microsoft, told reporters that the top management of the Redmond corporation is seriously considering the possibility of acquiring EA, Valve and PUBG Corp. companies. It sounds, to put it mildly, not very believable. But in light of the fact that the head of the game division of Microsoft Phil Spencer recently said that the company plans to invest huge amounts in the acquisition of new studios - it may be that this rumor is close to reality.
The Xbox One game console has one serious drawback: the lack of AAA-level exclusives that the PlayStation 4 is famous for. This situation is due to the fact that Microsoft has an acute shortage of its own internal studios. Yes, there are such series as Halo and Forza Motorsport, but they alone will not be full. And the players understand this perfectly, increasingly choosing in favor of the Sony console. And even the release of the most powerful console Xbox One X could not outweigh the scales in favor of Microsoft, only briefly increasing the sales of their consoles.
Redmond Corporation has always been famous for acquiring fully-formed studios instead of opening new ones from scratch. However, very few Microsoft-bought studios survived to this day. Recall at least the legendary Lionhead, which was closed in 2016, or created a series of MechWarrior FASA Studio, ceased to exist in 2007. The list of purchased and "destroyed" Microsoft studios can be continued for a long time. However, there are also positive examples. The same Mojang, who created Minecraft, brings huge amounts of money to the Corporation to this day.
It's hard to say what will give Microsoft the acquisition of such giants of the gaming industry as Valve or EA. What can we say about the studio PUBG Corporation, Bluehole, Inc., which created the super-popular game Player's Unknown Battleground (PUBG), in which tens of millions of players from hundreds of countries today spend their time. Transactions of this level can draw a few billion dollars, but for Microsoft this is not a problem, because its assets today are about 200 billion, and the annual net profit exceeds $ 10 billion.
