In recent years, releasing remaster versions of old hits has become stylish, fashionable and youthful. And for the publisher this approach is convenient: the money for development does not go so much as when creating a project from scratch, the revenue brings a solid. However, any remaster when transferring to modern platforms invariably retains the gameplay of the original. After all, if the graphics, music and stuff can be pulled up to modern standards, the gameplay always remains the same as the number of years ago. And here comes the fun part: will the gameplay (for which, in fact, many people play games) stand the test of time? So today we will find out what Burnout Paradise was 10 years ago: a simple auto-arcade for 1 time or a full-fledged project, which you can return to without problems after many years.
Game: Burnout Paradise Remastered
Platform: Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
Genre: arcade races
Release date: March 16, 2018
Developer: Criterion Games
Publisher: Electronic Arts
In general, I usually do not do this, but this time I want to spark your attention to the ending of the review: Burnout Paradise is a 100% hit, tested by time, it's fun and interesting to play in 2008, even in 2018 (and I'm sure, it will be interesting even in 2028). If this is enough for you, you can get the game right now and start the fun. But if you want to learn "What exactly does Burnout Paradise do with a hit?" Then keep reading - now we'll put everything in order.
To begin with, it is important to understand where the legs of the original game grow from. A series of Burnout games was born in 2001 at the time of PlayStation 2 and the very first Xbox. From then until 2008 (to which we will return) it remained exclusively a console entertainment. But the important thing here is that: the Burnout series has always been not exactly about the race: the bias in it was made on colorful accidents involving dozens of cars, burning a kiloton of nitro for acceleration, knocking opponents out of the road and in general a very aggressive driving style. The closest benchmark for PC players before the release of Paradise was the games of the FlatOut series with the only difference that the latter was still more about ring racing on rough terrain, and entertainment in the spirit of "run the driver through the windshield" was just an attachment to the main dish.
The Burnout series with each successive part added more and more auto-bezume (although, to the point of obscenity with the driver, it never came up), introduced a variety of game modes and generally became "faster, higher, stronger". In 2008, Criterion Games collected all the best ideas in recent years, seasoned it with a bunch of innovations and released players into the open world of the city of Paradise City. I do not want to talk about the game within the time frame, so I will not stop torturing you with dates and historical facts, and I'll get down to the point, because all that is said below (except for a couple of moments) is true for both the remaster version and the 10-year-old game .
I would like to start unconventional with music. It's a gorgeous soundtrack game that meets us. When you start from the speakers, the beautiful composition of Paradise City performed by Guns N 'Roses begins to sound, which immediately adjusts to the right mode. The rest of the tracks are in no way inferior, and the range of rock artists here varies from Canadian pop punk performer Avril Lavigne to metal killers Killswitch Engage, with a pinch of Depeche Mode and even Junkie XL. But only the rock authors decided not to limit themselves and added, you will not believe, classical music. Who would have thought, but arrange a destroying on the roads under Vivaldi, Mozart, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky is no less steep than under any Twisted Sister. As for me, it's just a brilliant decision, because in the cinema such a mismatch of the visual range and audio (when the wreck around accompanies calm classical music) is applied with enviable constancy. Nevertheless, in the gaming industry, Criterion Games thought of this as one of the first along with the creators of Test Drive Unlimited. But if you suddenly find classical music is not enough, the game also contains OST from the previous games of the series. All this together, according to my personal feelings, makes the musical accompaniment one of the best soundtracks in the industry. The compositions are very organically correlated with what is happening on the screen. Something on the level of unforgettable tunes from NFS: Underground or even higher.
Since we are talking about music, I would like to immediately clarify the whole audio component. The sound of the engine engine, of course, does not reach the mastodons of the genre like Gran Turismo, but this is not required. The car of each class sounds in its own way and at the same time very well. On the road, you will always understand what your rival is riding: on an oil mask, a jeep, a sports car or an ordinary sedan. This is quite enough for the auto-arcade. Well, a couple of words about the translation in general: the text is not enough, and the one that is, translated without any complaints. The local radio DJ acting under the pseudonym Atomica is simply perfect! The voice is chosen almost perfectly, and the translation is performed at a very decent level. By the way, Atomica never rummages on trifles - in all its replicas there is always one or another hint about the world of the game or the game process.
To match the music and graphics. Yes, it does not have enough stars from the sky, but the virtual city looks great. All the buildings, roads and even passing cars are fine detailed, and to sweep along the serpentine at sunset - and at all a complete pleasure. Yes, there is a change in the time of day in the game, and even a change in cloud cover (which was, I think, still in the original game), but at the same time somewhat frustrating the absence of any other weather conditions. But in the rain or with a strong wind Paradise City could look even better! But even in this form everything is very neat and tidy, with no extra bells and whistles, but with a frequency of 60 frames per second and with excellent anti-aliasing, unlike the 2008 game. In general, the picture is beautiful, does not cause negative emotions and looks quite up to date.
But Burnout was never a game about graphics. Here, to the foreground, as already mentioned, there are crashes, and with them Criterion Games did something unimaginable that nobody could repeat before or after them (except for the already mentioned FlatOut). At the time of the collision of the car body, bend, crumple, from under them fly sheaves of sparks, fly off the wheels, metal is compressed - and all this in the chic Slow-mo. Each accident here is not similar to the previous one, and the damage system is one of the best in the gaming industry to this day. Unfortunately, this applies only to your cars and car rivals. At moments when you decide to create on the road a real auto collapse (about which just below) in a special mode, this does not apply - in this case, the car will not show a single scratch. Yes, at the time of the original, this limitation was dictated by the insufficient power of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but in the re-release, this could have been corrected.
As for game modes, then we have: race from point A to point B, hunting, pursuit, tricks and special arrivals for a while. It would seem that the arsenal is not rich, but due to the unpredictability of competitors, each race is not like the previous one, and it's not too long to play in each of the modes. The most classic is the arrival from one point to another, during which you are free to choose your route. He, perhaps, the only one, does not need explanations. Here you are, here's the track, here's the rivals. Gas in the floor, nitro to full, and go to the finish. Hunting and harassment are much more interesting. During the hunt you need to destroy by any means a certain number of rivals, and during the prosecution you already act as a victim, and you need to get away from ill-wishers who drive around on extremely powerful cars. There are always a lot of them, and it's not so easy to hide from them. As for the tricks, for me it is the most ambiguous mode. You for a certain time need to "natrjukachit" for a certain number of points. On the one hand, a lot of places are scattered around the city, where it can be done - cliffs, springboards, super jump, places where you can make a barrel, billboards, schottky, barricades, abandoned tramways and airports and so on. But the catchphrases are here: if you know where these places are located, then it's not a problem for you to get the right amount of points. If not, then you can aimlessly ride in the hope of "trick" somewhere. It all depends on the knowledge of the city, and not on your skill, which, I think, is not very correct from the point of view of game design.
On this list of your studies in Paradise City does not end. Because the city itself - a very important element of gameplay. It is simply beautifully designed, and not only is it interesting to learn, but also in the process of learning you can find a heap of activities for yourself. The same advertised billboards are often located so that finding a way to get close to them is a good quest. In addition, any road in the game is a challenge to both your driving skills and the skills of destruction. At any time in the open world, you can hold only 2 buttons and arrange a real mess: the car soars into the air, traffic on the road increases every 20, and in the center of this all you. You need to arrange as many accidents as possible, until the fuel stock is over. In my opinion, this is one of the best modes. In addition, you can set speed records, and on the streets now and then leave new cars that need to catch up and destroy in order to add them to your collection.
The cars themselves are divided into 3 types according to the race: racer, stunt man or aggressor. They differ not only in their behavior on the road (the rider is faster, the stunt maneuver is more aggressive, the aggressor is stronger), but also by the method of recruiting nitro, and also by the method of using it. Racers, as expected, gain acceleration for high speed, tricks, which is logical, for tricks, and the aggressors - for the destruction of rivals. At the same time racing cars can use nitro only at once, but at the same time if you continue to risk on the road, then you can join the nitro into chains, reaching some absolutely insane speeds. Stunts can accelerate even in flight, affecting maneuverability and handling, and the aggressors use nitro, as in any other race, on the principle of pressed-accelerated-released-repeated. However, the fun part is that the race class is not tied to the auto class, and you can easily turn dashing turns on a clumsy jeep or sit on the aggressor and pushing the enemies back to the finish line in the usual race. Need I say that in multiplayer, the degree of fun increases at times?
Any gameplay sooner or later starts to become boring. So it's time to say that Remastered includes all the add-ons for the original, the coolest of which is Big Surf Island. It was created by some very crazy people. It's a rather big island, connected to the main city by a long bridge, and on this island it's not enough that you can create all the same things you did before, so what else is going on is to something beyond the bounds: you'll almost fly through the streets and drive on the roofs of houses. I highly recommend visiting Big Surf Island only after some time after you have mastered the main game.
Unfortunately, the game did not bypass the bugs, and some of them migrated directly from the original, which is simply unacceptable. The game flew a couple of times and even tightly hung my console. Moreover, it also happened that everything around seemed to freeze. I already thought that the game was hanging, but after 5 seconds everything came back to square one. For the game already released a lot of patches, but the situation is almost not fixed. Especially this situation strains in a network game. This could be forgiven a new project, but not a verbatim copying of the game 10 years ago. For such a time, at least it was possible to catch old bugs.
pros
- Excellent gameplay, time-tested.
- Classy soundtrack.
- Neat and beautiful picture.
- A variety of game modes.
- Worthy translation and voice-over.
- The car damage model is the best for today.
Minuses
- Sooner or later the game process begins to become boring.
- Bugs and glitches, many of which are not repaired even after 10 years.
Burnout Paradise - a unique auto-arcade, which today is not enough. The gameplay is simple and sucking you tight. At the same time, you do not need special skills. Know yourself to eat and crush everything around. But the game does not deserve a higher rating. And all because the authors released a damp product. As already mentioned, to forgive such an abundance of bugs can be a new franchise, but not a copy of the game from 2008. My score game is 8.5 points from 10 . Do not be unfortunate defects - the evaluation could be much higher. But alas!
